Ski Safety On The Slopes

Are you thinking of going on a skiing holiday? If so, you should remember that it's not just about hiring the right ski clothing to make you look good, you should also spend a few minutes reading through our skiing safety guidelines to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your time on the slopes.

Skiing is an extreme sport recreational activity which can leave you exposed to the elements, and although it has a relatively low injury rate in recreational activity terms, you still need to take extra precautions when going on those slopes.

Thousands of skiers are hurt every year, and the sad fact is that many of these injuries could have been easily avoided.

Why not read a few of our guidelines below to reduce the risk of being injured and increase the chances of having nothing but fun on your skiing holiday?

Shape Up - If it's been a while since you last skied, or if you are a complete beginner, then ensure that you get fit before you leave. This might involve joining a gym or going to your local dry ski slope.

Take Lessons - You don't have to be a beginner to take lessons. You can also take a quick refresher course if you are in need of a quick reminder. The skiing instructor will also advise you on how to stay safe on the slopes.

Avalanche Awareness - Many skiers remain dangerously unaware of how to correctly handle an avalanche situation, or how to avoid causing one in the first place. Making sure that you are not one of these skiers might actually save your life.

Dress Correctly - Go to a reputable ski clothing hire shop and make sure that your outfit is windproof and waterproof, and fits you correctly.

Ski Appropriately - Never ski on slopes or in weather conditions which are beyond your ability. If you realise that you are out of your depth simply side step down the slope.

Stay on Piste - Make sure that you remain in the correct skiing area and that you avoid avalanche-prone areas.

Re-hydrate - Drink lots of water as you will lose a lot of moisture through sweat whilst exercising, and avoid drinking alcohol as this will dehydrate you.
